Mr. Alexis Lykourgiotis graduated from the Department of Chemistry of the University of Patras in 1971. In 1974 he was awarded the title of Doctor and in 1979 he was awarded the title of Professor. In 1987 he was elected Professor in the same Department, where he worked until 2014. In the meantime, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher for one year at the University of Louvain in Belgium. He was President of the Department of Chemistry of the University of Patras and Rector of the University of Patras for six years (1989-1994). He was also the first President of the Hellenic Open University (1995-2004) and President of the National Council of Education (2010-2013). His research interests focus on the area of Catalysis, Interfacial Chemistry, Photocatalysis and Biofuels. He is Emeritus Professor of the University of Patras and Honorary Professor of the Hellenic Open University.

During his rectoral term, the campus was radically reformed-renovated and more than six thousand plants were planted, several university buildings were constructed for the Departments (completion of Chemical Engineering, Biology, Mathematics buildings, the auditoriums and the library of the Faculty of Medicine, the construction of Geology building and the building of the pre-clinical laboratories of the Medical School) and for the social needs of the University Community (Schools, Bank, Post Office, Central Canteen), while the Conference Centre of the University of Patras was founded and its construction started. During the same period, through University actions, an agreement was reached between the Ministries of Education and Defense for the transfer of the area of the Air Force depot to the University campus. Also, funds were secured for the construction of the Civil Engineering and Central Library buildings. The first systematic effort was made to computerize the University, the first internal regulations of the institution were drawn up, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of Theatre Studies were established, and the company for the development of the property of the institution was founded. Finally, during his tenure a very large number of cultural events supported by the Topali Foundation were held, and two basements of the Chemical Engineering and Biology-Mathematics buildings were utilized for the construction of a small theatre and a music hall for the needs of the employees’ theatre group and the university choir.
